Traveling With A Baby - Is It Realistic?
People from past generations mostly believed that it’s if not impossible, it’s download impractical to travel with a baby. Many of them stopped traveling completely once they had a baby. In today’s world more and more people are starting to travel with babies and toddlers. Just look around when you next get to a top tourist destination - you will no doubt regularly see families traveling with their infants.
If you have twins, or perhaps a baby and a toddler, things are a little more complicated, but it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t travel with them. If you can take them down to the local supermarket in their brand new tandem stroller, you can just as well take them around the world and shop at Harrods in London. With a tandem stroller you can even get through narrow doorways without them having to open the double doors for you.
Of course traveling with a baby involves a little more planning than when you are traveling on your own. Forgetting little things, like baby bath towels or even worse disposable nappies, could quickly turn any day into a nightmare. The baby screaming for his favorite toy which is at that moment 10 000km away can also be quite unpleasant. Make a list before you leave home.
If you don’t have a spa baby yet, this might be the perfect time to get one. What this enables you to do is to bath the baby in an upright position, which they find much less scary than being submerged in water horizontally. If you were 30cm tall and couldn’t swim you would probably feel the same way.
If you are traveling by car, make sure to buy a carrier-style car seat for the baby. This makes it very easy to transfer him or her from the stroller to the car and back. Every time you use one of these, remember how your mother never had such a luxury and be thankful!
Of course you have to think of the baby when deciding when you are going to travel. If the outside temperature will be more than thirty degrees, it won’t just be very uncomfortable for the baby, it will also not be a pleasure for you to carry or push a baby around with sweat running down your back all the time. Similarly, traveling with your baby in the middle of winter is not a good idea. Spring and fall (autumn) are the best times of the year to travel with an infant.
Make sure to bring your camera. During your travels with your child you will often get into situations which might be very frustrating at the time, but when you look at the pictures later you will realize it was actually quite funny. It’s pictures like this that make a scrapbook or photo album come alive…
