Door Edge Protectors And Fire Guards: Making Homes Safer For Babies

The home becomes a place of adventure as babies start to crawl, with different areas for them to explore. Although we might think of our home as a fairly safe place, for young children there are dangers at every corner be it sharp edges, hot surfaces or toxic chemicals. It is estimated that approximately half of the two million accidents suffered by children every year happen in the home, with cuts, burns and poisoning being common. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your home is as safe as it can be for your child as it grows up. The suggestions below will make your house much safer for any child moving from room to room.

It is natural for children to want to explore the different rooms in your house as they become a bit older. This means that they move through doorways several times a day. Splinters and scratches can be reduced by installing door edge protectors which will eliminate chipped wood and sharp corners. Door stoppers will prevent any fingers and toes getting caught in closing doors.

Burns are a common injury among children as mentioned previously. Burns are usually caused in the kitchen or the bedroom. When cooking, keep your child away from the oven door and always try to use the back rings on the hob if possible. Hair straightening appliances should be kept out of the reach of children until they have cooled down completely. Remember also to keep naked flames out of children’s reach and use a fire guard.

Children are curious, and they like putting things in their mouths. This is a problem in the home as there are things left lying about that a child may put in their mouth, what they find under the sofa or in bottles. Bottles, medicines and small objects should be kept out of reach and stored away in cupboards with child proof locks. Even some things that we may not think could harm us, may damage a child because of their underdeveloped immune system, so don’t take any risks.
